Canada’s Greener Homes Grant Program in Manitoba to Close for New Applications in March 2024

Winnipeg, Manitoba – 25.01.2024 – Canada’s Greener Homes Grant, a pivotal initiative for homeowners in Manitoba aiming to enhance their homes’ energy efficiency, is set to cease accepting new applicants from March 2024. This announcement comes as the program witnesses an overwhelming response, exceeding initial projections.

Launched in May 2021, the Greener Homes Grant was a seven-year, $2.6 billion government initiative intended to support Canadian homeowners in retrofitting their homes. The program's objectives aligned with Canada’s 2030 Climate Change Commitment, aiming to retrofit 700,000 homes to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

To date, the program has received over 182,000 applications, representing 25% of the intended grants in just the first seven months. This remarkable uptake indicates a significant homeowner interest in making sustainable home improvements.

Key Features of the Greener Homes Grant:

  • The grant facilitated homeowners in retrofitting their homes with energy-efficient upgrades, including improved windows, doors, insulation, electric heat pumps, and solar panels.
  • Homeowners seeking to qualify for the grant required an evaluation before and after the retrofit.
  • Successful applicants have been eligible for grants ranging from $125 to $5,000.

While the program ceases to accept new applications, processing and fulfillment of the current applications and grants are expected to continue for approximately a year.

Continuing Support for Homeowners:

Though the Greener Homes Grant concludes for new applicants, homeowners still have access to financial support. Canadian citizens can apply for a 10-year, interest-free loan of up to $40,000 for eligible retrofits, ensuring the continuation of efforts towards energy-efficient and environmentally friendly homes.
